Just another day at the office…oh, wait…

September 29, 2009 · 1 Comment

Big things going down at work recently. Not sure how much I can say about any of the projects at the moment as we’re quite near to launching them, but regardless of the secrecy LOOK IT’S ME AND MARTIN LAMBIE-NAIRN!

Soft focus purely accidental (thanks to Graham's camera)

Soft focus purely accidental (thanks to Graham's camera)

For any of you who don’t know Martin and his work (and if you are anyway interested in graphic design and branding then shame on you) then here’s a quick round up:

First he did this.
Then he set up this.
And they do loads of famous stuff, including this and this.
He then left to set up on his own (again) and did these. (Plus a hell of a lot more in between)

Needless to say, Martin pretty much invented channel branding and so to be working with him is pretty special, especially as he’s such a gracious and enjoyable fellow to work with (unlike certain members of the creative industries that I have met).

Hopefully I’ll have some of the work that we’ve been helping him with live soon so I can be one of those annoying people that points out any of their live work that’s out and about on the streets.

Heavenly_Now_Bullshit_Free

Thanks to the heartwarming generosity of the chaps and chapettes over at Sell!Sell!, we now have this handy reminder on our walls ensuring we keep things simple here at Heavenly towers.

Note: it is actually carefully positioned by our account directors/strategy director, as they freely admitted they were running on a “healthy bullshit economy”.

Cheers Sell!Sell!

Soooo… new work slowly coming together after a rather tumultuous time recently. Just to prove I haven’t just being sitting round on my arse all day (well technically I have, seeing as I have to sit at my desk to work) here’s a bit of a teaser from my favourite project to date.

Biz_card_1

Yep that’s correct, thats some gold foil blocking right there. Plenty more to come (once it arrives from the printers) so keep your eyes on www.adamding.co.uk as this, along with others, will be gracing that page when I implement the much needed shuffle around I’ve been orchestrating.

Over and out.

Very Wicked

Cracking little bit of work here that contained The Observer film section last weekend. Surprised that this hasn’t made it onto a blog somewhere by now so in that case I officially claim this spot in the name of Adam Ding (even though it was technically Heavenly accounts chappie Neil Whyte who spotted it)!

No posts in April, eh? Goodness me. Must do better. I’ll put it down to trying to settle into a routine with the wife.

Anyway, onwards and upload. Here a pun-tastic web address spotted down Edgware Road…

Fleuron Pixel wall

Anyone on here who used to follow the mighty Serif blog would have been much saddened by it being taken off the e-airwaves late last year. Never fear though, as it has been (sort of) resurrected by one of The Serif’s founders as the Fleuron.  (Bonus points if you understand the significance of its moniker. If not, go here and get learned)

Alongside the procrastination-tastic design, photography, typography and generally uber-creative posts on the site, it also has a creative opportunities section. Although currently pretty sparse, this was one feature (as I’m sure last year’s graphic design grads like myself will remember) played a very important part in the popularity of The Serif. Hopefully it’ll start padding out nicely for when the next crop come bursting out of their respective universities in a couple of months time!

Also rather excellently, you can help support the site (and get a wee bit of self promotion in on the home page) by contributing a 17×17 pixel icon to the supporters pixel wall on the home page. All you have to do is pop a link to the Fleuron on your site then send your icon over to the chaps, where they’ll happily oblige by sticking your little contribution to the insides of everyone’s screen (at least I think that’s how the internet works.)

Check-ch-check-ch-check-ch-check it owt.

Fun with apps and internets

iPhone app + Basset Hound + Daft Punk Console = sunday evening fun for me and my friend Adam.

If clicking the picture doesn’t work go here.

Basset Funk

Anyone who has been on the design blogs recently will recognise the Mouth Off iPhone app and the Daft Punk keyboard emulator. Having nothing better to do, myself and mr.Peters created what we believe to be the first perfect internet-technology feedback loop. I’d draw a graph to explain the science better but I’m all out of graph paper.

Handmade By Machine

A good friend of mine named Andy C and myself have recently been collaborating on a few bits of printed ephemera (and also have big plans on producing more when I have access to the dream that is “disposable income”) and we’ve been talking for a while about popping it all up in a little web-shop for people to buy if they so desire.

Running under the name of Handmade By Machine, we’ve also taken this opportunity to run the new Cargo web architecture. It’s a similar format to the almost omnipotent indexhibit, though has a slightly cleaner layout and an easier installation method, so you can have a pretty fresh looking page up and running fairly quickly. Currently in Beta it’s by request only so you better hurry if you want a go before it goes “mainstream”!

As for the shop…well, we haven’t really got that much to sell just yet. Though if you want to trundle over and admire some excellent moustaches then do so here.

Peace.

Travel expenses will be paid…

wanted

So recently I’ve been working freelance as opposed to “on placement” at companies, which means better wages, more responsibility, but a good deal more input on projects and a real sense of having an impact on a studios work. Although saying this, I know that I’m still relatively inexperienced in the design world so would be open to working on paid placements at respected design agencies where I’d value the opportunity to work alongside other seasoned proffessionals.

Pay attention to that last paragraph though; paid placements in respected design agencies.

Too often I see ads like the one above being posted by start up businesses and even (slightly sickeningly) design agencies. I understand fully the position that a new design company can be in: a creative director leaves an established company to start up on his/her own. He/she doesn’t have enough work to offer up a permanent position as yet and so employs a recent grad on a placement/freelance basis (much like my friend Ben, currently at B&B Studio). This is great for the graduate as it provides hands on experience working alongside a well respected designers, allowing them to learn skills and techniques that can only be gained from working closely on client briefs and possibly a job if the studio continues to grow. It’s also great for the creative director, as they get the passion and enthusiasm of a young designer, plus can keep expenditure pretty low until more work is guaranteed.

Brilliant, everyone is happy.

However, some other people see this happening and think “Great! We can get someone who doesn’t fully understand the industry yet to come and work for peanuts and claim that they should value the experience! Get an ad up on YCN!”. The agency posts an ad in the hope that a recent graduate, struggling to find work and experience in the current economic storm, will run round doing their work for them whilst barely being able to make rent and food shopping each week.

Similarly, a new business starts up. They ring a design/branding agency to get a quote for their branding and identity. They think “Hmmm…thats actually quite expensive. I mean, I am serious about my business, but is it really going to cost that much for someone to pick some pretty colours and draw a logo for me?”. Just then, a friend of a friend points out that they know a few design students/recent grads who are looking for design experience to put on their c.v’s and again, they think ”Great! We can get someone who doesn’t fully understand the industry yet to come and work for peanuts and claim that they should value the experience! Get an ad up on YCN!”

It’s pretty cynical isn’t it? I’m happy to admit that I have worked for free in the past (for design agencies and for start up businesses) though each time I have it’s lead to further freelance work paid at the appropriate rate. I made sure I knew these people properly first and that they could be trusted in the long term. Recently though I’ve noticed an increase in the number of ads similar to those above, posted by people taking advantage of the current lack of jobs on the market to get grads to work for a sub-par rate of pay on the premise of “real design experience”.

For smaller studios it is understandable that they don’t pay students on placement, as their skills may not necessarily transfer into the industry yet (I have worked for a couple of great little studios who do this) but when it comes to post-grad placements then you really should be able to spare a few pennies for the rent and food. And if you’re worried about them not working hard enough for that money or that they’re not good enough then tell them so and let them go. If they really want to do this they’ll re-double their efforts in either instance and eventually find employment, thanking you for the kick up the arse.

Small businesses advertising these positions should really take a look at themselves and ask themselves if they really value their business. Because if they do then they will appreciate the ability of design and branding to help a company grow and should happily pay for it.

Otherwise people, leave the kids alone. Rant over.

To blog and be blogged

Tiny bit of media attention can be found here and here.

The tiniest of splashes in the ocean of information that is the interweb, but it’s certainly nice to have something described as “swashalicious” by a typographer as awesome as Yves Peters!

In other news, I’d love to hear from anyone who can coach Table Football defending, as my Bergkamp-like calm in front of goal is being severely let down by my defence.
